Clement Mok Receives Global Business Book Award
Designing Business Gets Top Honors as Best Business "How-To" Book
San Francisco, CA June 9, 1997
The Best Business "How-To" Book Award at the Financial Times/Booz-Allen &
Hamilton Global Business Book Awards went to Designing Business Multiple
Media, Multiple Disciplines, Clement Mok's analysis of how to bring
structure and clarity to the mass of digital information unleashed by
emerging communication channels such as the Internet. The honor carries
with it a $5000 award and comes just as the Japanese language version of
the book is about to be released.
Mok, founder of Studio Archetype and two successful digital product
companies, CMCD and NetObjects, commented, "My colleagues at Studio
Archetype, Adobe Press, and I are very proud of the award, and pleased that
the book has been useful to many companies as they rethink their businesses
for the growing use of digital communications. We like to think we are
helping companies build bridges to the digital age."
The Global Business Book Awards program was originated in 1995 by the
Financial Times, one of the world's most widely read and influential
newspapers, and Booz-Allen & Hamilton, the world's leading management and
technology consulting firm, to recognize the most innovative business
literature and to promote worldwide readership of business books.
More than 110 books from 55 publishers around the world were nominated for
the 1996 awards. A panel of executives selected 75 semi-finalists. These
books, in turn, were read and evaluated by nearly 150 readers academics,
journalists, business people in the U.S. and Europe.
"The 1996 Global Business Book Awards truly represented the best ideas in
business," said Brian N. Dickie, president and chief operating officer of
Booz-Allen & Hamilton. "All of the books honored here will have a major
impact on business decision makers around the world."
In writing the book, Mok drew upon his experience as a graphic designer and
information architect. As founder of Studio Archetype, formerly known as
Clement Mok designs, Mok and his team have worked with hundreds of clients
to discover how the traditional goals of design clear communication and
structure translate to the world of interactive, media-rich content. The
book is rich with illustrations and case examples.
Mok and his colleagues say the nature of a company's brand identity and
information assets have changed dramatically in the digital age, but more
importantly, the definition of what a product offering is today is
fundamentally different. The shift from creating physical products to
creating information products creates the need for new kinds of team
expertise, business alliances, and ways of doing business.
Paul Saffo, Director of the Institute For the Future, lauded the book at
its Spring 1996 release, saying Designing Business is "essential reading
for anyone struggling to tame the new digital technologies in the service
of business effectiveness."
